Shipping books to Somalia libraries

We are excited to share with you that we have been able to combine all of the crowd-funding with additional local funding to finance a shipment of books to Somalia! Over the next couple months, we will arrange to import, transport and distribute the books.

ims library 400-300We estimate this shipment will include over 150,000 books and will reach 200,000 readers. The books shipment will include reference books, early readers, textbooks and other literature. Essential textbooks are given to medical students, nurses and teaching students as well as secondary school students. We will partner with a large number of organisations to distribute the books including universities (Hargeisa, Buroa, Admas, Hope, Tima-ade, Alpha and Gollis), vocational institutions (Hargeisa Nursing school, civil service institute, Teacher Training Institute Hargeisa), community libraries (Quba, Jij-Jiga Yar, Gariye, Nuradin School Library). Nuradin is especially important as it acts as a school library distribution point for over 20 secondary schools including 10,000 secondary students.

When a new shipment arrives at AET, the whole community gets involved. Local dignitaries visit to applaud the arrival of the books and there are features in the media. It’s a real cause for celebration for the people of Hargeisa and the whole of Somaliland.

We will also continue to train and support our libraries and librarians to ensure efficient operation of the libraries, so that the books are available to the maximum number of people possible.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen and we will keep everyone updated on the book distribution.
